The roses
were picked from a vineyard next door to the Wine Cellar where
this painting was composed. Traditionally, roses are planted
at the end of each row of vines. It was believed that the roses
would get the diseases first and alert the winemaker to infestations
of pests or diseases before they affected his grapevines. This
painting is built around opposite colors yellow and purple which
contrasts different sides of the painting. The name of painting
relates not only to the fragrance of the flowers but also to
the bouquet of the wine, which is Rombauer Chardonnay.
