The name of this painting “Gold Medal Winner” refers to the rose variety, as well as the medal awarded this outstanding wine.  It is tradition to plant roses at the end of each row of grape vines as a "bellwether."  It is believed that the rose bush will alert vintners to diseases or insect infestations prior to infecting the vines.
